AQUALIFES SHELLFISH TANK WINS WORLDSTAR PACKAGING AWARD
Aqualife's transport and distribution tanks for containers, manufactured by Promens Farum in Denmark, has been awarded the Nordic Scanstar packaging awards and Silver in the Dutch Innovation Awards.
In short the product consists of a closed tank with shelfs for live shellfish and a filtration system. The shellfish is kept at a constant temperature in this closed environment during transportation. The system is already in operation on routes between Canada and Europe and it has been established that by using this system CO2 emissions are reduced to 3 percent, or 30 times less than air freight.
Today the price gap between fresh and frozen seafood is up to 500 percent. With the Aqualife tank this gap can almost be closed due to the lower freight rate and the fact is that the system keeps the shellfish alive in their own environment right up until the moment of consumption. This reduces waste, and allows the shellfish to stay in top-quality condition.
Up until now only luxury foods such as lobsters have been cost-efficient to air freight over longer distances. With Aqualife it is now also cost-efficient to ship products such as live clams and mussels from one continent to another. Access to fresh ingredients means tastier meals, leading to higher demand.
